brocade
Brocades
Fabric is a rich jacquard fabric with intricate designs on its surface
which looks as if they are embossed or embroidered but are made by weaving
supplementary weft yarns (silk or silver/golden zari; single color or
multi-colored) into the warp on a special jacquard loom. The patterns can be
simple shapes like scrolls, flowers, or animals or as intricate as they come.
The fabric usually has a twill or
satin background and is typically thick and heavy.
In the making of brocade fabric, the shuttles that move the
thread are used only on the places where the patterns are supposed to be. Hence
the weft thread is discontinuous on the fabric. For small designs, if you look
at the back of a brocade fabric, you may see only the base fabric, but on the
surface, you will find the pattern. This saves a lot of thread too.

This brocade fabric has gold and silver thread weaved to form the patterns.
Brocade saris of India are made of this – gold or silver zari is used along
with colored silks to create various intricate motifs in this brocade fabric.
Originally zari was made of real silver of 98 percent purity
but as this is not feasible synthetic zari is used. Gold threads are actually
only silver threads with gold polish, which are obtained by closely winding
extremely fine silver wire around a silk thread
The motifs usually used in Indian Brocade are that of floral
bouquets, flowers, stars and the moon, betel leaf etc.
Brocade fabrics are mostly used for upholsteries and draperies. Semi-precious
stones to adorn brocade fabrics have been replaced with sequins and beads for
decoration. Banarasi brocade fabric and Banarasi brocade silk sarees
are extremely popular worldwide. Patterns that are traditionally used on brocade
fabrics are now used on western garments as well. Wearing Banarasi brocade is
considered highly lavish, even in the formal events, such garments are usually
styled with equally heavy jewelry.
Today, Brocade is one of the most
popular fabrics in West Africa and is also worn by many people in
Germany, Austria, and across Europe. Due to its comfort, simplicity, stylish
patterns and hardiness, brocade is the perfect fabric for someone living a
busy, modern-day lifestyle. As in the Middle Ages, brocade is made from a
number of different fabrics, including silk, cotton, and linen, depending on
where they are made.
